An HL7 interface device will create an HL7 message that will interface into an EHR.

For an HL7 interface, a remote server needs to be configured on your customer's network with the Service Controller installed and either MTREMDIST application or CNREMDIST (when installed as a service).  It is recommended to install CNREMDIST, as this will run as a Windows service.

To set up a flat file drop interface, under the Main tab:

1.  DEVICE CODE:  Define a code for the device, i.e., HL7.  This will be a unique code for that site.

2.  DEVICE DESCRIPTION:  Define a description for the device, i.e., CREATE HL7 MESSAGE

3.  DEVICE TYPE:  Select Interface for the device type.

4.  OUTPUT LOCATION:  The output location is Remote

5.  If Web Portal users can distribute using this device, select 'Allow Web Portal Users to Distribute to this Device.'

6.  Select 'This Device will Change the Report Status to Delivered.'

Under the Interface Tab:

1.  Select the appropriate Interface Type - these are generally HL7, HL7_PDF, HL7_RTF or HL7_SR.  Please refer to Interface Types for descriptions of all interface types.

2.  Define the Output Path.  This is the path to the file on the remote server, i.e., %ROOT%\PUBLIC\SITES\SITECODE\HL7-REPORTS\PROD.

3.  Define the File Name Format.  This is usually the Report ID.

4.  Put in the file extension that you want.  The standard extension is HL7 (no . 'period' before the extension)

5.  If the form's headers and/or footers should be on the HL7 message, select Include Form's Page Headers and/or Include Form's Page Footers.

6.  Include Addendums is only used in legacy versions and included here for backwards compatibility

Under the Interface Mapping tab

Select the appropriate interface type (HL7 ORU, HL7 MDM, Hl7 PDF, CDA) based on your customer's EHR interface specifications.
