Setting Up a Remote Server

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Typically, an MTSO needs to interface with its customers in ways that are more efficient and/or secure if done locally via the customer's local area network, as opposed to over a wide area network.  In order to allow this, ChartNet remote software must be installed on a server or workstaion located on the MTSO customer's network. This software then communicates back to the ChartNet host server for instructions on what to do. Since all ChartNet software uses https (secure http using the Secure Socket Layer), data transmission is secure and the need for a permanent VPN between the MTSO's customer and the ChartNet host system is eliminated.

Note: In order for the MTSO (or HMS) to install and manage the ChartNet remote software that resides on the MTSO customer's server, remote access to the server is required using RDP, VNC, or some other common remote access software. Use of a VPN client to connect to the customer's network is encouraged.

The types of interfacing and processes that might occur on a remote server might include the following:

Capturing ADT transactions via HL7 socket-to-socket connections

Capturing Order transactions (for Radiology) via HL7 socket-to-socket connections

Sending reports back to an HL7 interface via an HL7 socket-to-socket connection

Sending audio files that were exported from a customer's dictation system back to the ChartNet host server for importing into ChartNet

Downloading reports to be printing on the customer's printers

Downloading reports to be stored on a customer's server

Downloading reports to be printed at the patient's current location

This chapter describes the process of setting up and configuring ChartNet remote server software modules.
